Checklist for RV Maintenance Prior to Your Summer Road Trip

Checklist for RV Maintenance Prior to Your Summer Road Trip

Essential Checklist for RV Owners

As you prepare to hit the road for your summer adventure, it’s important to make sure your RV is in tip-top shape for your road trip! All of us here at Patriot RV want to ensure your trips are hassle-free, relaxing, and fun, so read on for our checklist to ensure your RV is running perfectly before jumping on the highway.

First things first, make sure all of your engine-related maintenance is up to date. Test your battery to make sure you don’t end up stranded! It’s important to have a pair of functional jumper cables as well should your battery die at any point while you’re on the road. Check for any oil leaks from all parts of the engine and change your oil if necessary. Replace your oil and air filters, and check your belts and hoses. Any that show signs of corrosion, cracking or general wear should be replaced. This quick check will save you from huge problems on the road as well as expensive tows and maintenance fees.

Next on the checklist is an inspection of the exterior of your vehicle. While this may not seem nearly as important as looking under the hood, skipping this vital step could cause your trip to come to a screeching halt. Check every single tire. If they are extremely worn and the tread is fading, it’s time to replace them. You’ll also want to make sure the tire pressure is within the manufacturer’s recommended range, if not, fill them up with the necessary amount. Look at all your windows and doors to check the seals for cracks or gaps. Hot air seeping in will make for a pretty unpleasant trip and allow bugs and other unwanted critters to make their way in. Next, check your lights. Make sure all of them are working, headlights, taillights, brake lights, and blinkers. Windshield wipers should be replaced if they’re streaking and windshield wiper fluid should be topped off for optimal visibility.

After you’ve ensured the exterior is ready to go, take it to the interior. Check to make sure you have a fire extinguisher that is functioning, all furniture glides smoothly if it is moveable, electrical outlets are all working, and your fridge and stove both turn on and function correctly. Empty both your black and great water tanks and check for leaks, and finally, make sure your water heater is pumping out warm water.

One of the best things you can do before a long trip is to take your camper out on a test trip. Don’t go too far from home, and use everything you would on a long getaway. This will help you find any issues that may have gone unnoticed during your initial check!
